JAMMER ART – Sunsets

Image
https://web.archive.org/web/20140508231035/http://dailyexplorer.animaljam.com/  This week’s Jammer Art features sunsets and the works of Mighty Shiverscout, Twinkle Cottonivy, Daredevil Rockypenguin, Fabulous Prettyfox, and Snowflake Magicgirl. Have you ever wondered what causes the colors of the sunset? There are tiny particles in the air that can change the direction of light rays, causing them to go in many different directions. This effect is called “scattering”. Scattering affects the color of light coming from the sky, but the colors are dependent on the light’s wavelength and the size of the particle. Blue and purple waves are short and are easier to scatter. During the day, blue and purple waves can reach our eye from all directions, but humans don’t see purple waves very well. That is why the sky appears blue! During sunrises and sunsets, sunlight passes though more air and has a longer path to travel on the horizon than during mid-day. More air and a longer path means mor...

CREATURE FEATURE – Staghorn Beetles

Image
https://web.archive.org/web/20140506061946/http://dailyexplorer.animaljam.com/ Dr. Brady Barr shows us a rhinoceros (also called Hercules) staghorn beetle in this weeks AJHQ+A. Growing up to six inches in length, the stag beetles are some of the biggest beetle species. All beetles can fly, and the staghorns have especially impressive wings: when extended, they can measure over 12 inches from tip-to-tip! These beetles are know for their spiky appendages, which is something that grows out of the body. Their appendages can look like the horns of a deer, rhinoceros, or even a triceratops! Although the horns may look dangerous, they aren’t used for biting. Instead, they are only used for fights with other male beetles. Very few injuries occur during these fights, as they are largely for show and end when one beetle is flipped on its back. Stag beetle larva feed on decaying wood and can take up to 5 years to grow into an adult. Adult beetles only live for the summer, typically May throu...
